Sales Tax Rate in Quebec in 2026

Rate in effect in 2026 in Quebec, checked on against the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec.
TaxRate
GST (federal)5%
QST (provincial)9.975%
Combined rate14.975%

Quebec is the only province where two separate sales taxes appear on the receipt: the federal 5% GST and the 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax (QST). Under an agreement with the federal government, Revenu Québec administers both, so a Quebec business files its GST and QST returns with the same agency.

Since January 1, 2013, QST has been calculated on the price before tax, not on the GST-included price. The combined rate is therefore the simple sum 5% + 9.975% = 14.975%. Applying QST on top of GST would give 15.47%, a method that no longer applies.

Worked Example: $250.00 in Quebec

GST = price before tax × 5%
QST = price before tax × 9.975%
Total = price before tax + GST + QST

Example: $250.00 before tax in Quebec

Price before tax $250.00
GST5% $12.50
QST9.975% $24.94
TOTAL $287.44

The math: $250.00 × 5% = $12.50 of GST; $250.00 × 9.975% = $24.94 of QST. Each tax is rounded to the cent, then added to the price, for a total of $287.44.

The Other Way: Finding the Price Before Tax

If the displayed price already includes tax, divide it by 1.14975: $287.44 ÷ 1.14975 = $250.00. Subtracting 14.975% from the total would give $244.40, too low a result: the percentage applies to the price before tax, not the total.

Frequently Asked Questions: Sales Tax in Quebec

What is the sales tax rate in Quebec in 2026?

The combined rate is 14.975%: the federal 5% GST plus the 9.975% QST, each calculated on the price before tax. On $100.00, that's $5.00 of GST, $9.98 of QST and a total of $114.98.

How do I calculate sales tax in Quebec?

Multiply the price before tax by 1.14975 to get the tax-included total, or by 14.975% to get the tax alone (calculating GST and QST separately, then adding them). On $250.00, the tax is $37.44 and the total is $287.44.

How do I remove sales tax from a price in Quebec?

Divide the tax-included amount by 1.14975, instead of subtracting 14.975%. A $287.44 total gives back $287.44 ÷ 1.14975 = $250.00 before tax. The CalculatriceTaxes.ca reverse calculator applies this formula automatically.

Is QST calculated on top of GST?

No. Since January 1, 2013, QST has been calculated on the price before tax, just like GST. The two taxes are independent: the combined rate is 14.975%, not the 15.47% a compounded calculation would give.
