Sales Tax Rate in Ontario in 2026
| Tax | Rate |
|---|---|
| Federal share (included in HST) | 5% |
| Provincial share (included in HST) | 8% |
| HST charged | 13% |
Ontario applies the 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST): a single tax combining the 5% federal share and an 8% provincial share. It's administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, which then remits the provincial share to Ontario. Customers see just one “HST” line on their receipt.
For an interprovincial sale, the delivery province sets the rate: a Quebec business delivering goods to an Ontario customer charges the 13% HST, not GST and QST. The article on calculating sales tax in Ontario explains this place-of-supply rule.
Worked Example: $80.00 in Ontario
Tax = price before tax × 13%
Total = price before tax × 1.13
Example: $80.00 before tax in Ontario
The math: $80.00 × 13% = $10.40 of HST. Each tax is rounded to the cent, then added to the price, for a total of $90.40.
The Other Way: Finding the Price Before Tax
If the displayed price already includes tax, divide it by 1.13: $90.40 ÷ 1.13 = $80.00. Subtracting 13% from the total would give $78.65, too low a result: the percentage applies to the price before tax, not the total.
Frequently Asked Questions: Sales Tax in Ontario
What is the sales tax rate in Ontario in 2026?
The rate is 13% in Ontario: it's the HST, which combines the 5% federal share with a 8% provincial share. On $100.00, the tax is $13.00, for a total of $113.00.
How do I calculate sales tax in Ontario?
Multiply the price before tax by 1.13 to get the tax-included total, or by 13% to get the tax alone. On $80.00, the tax is $10.40 and the total is $90.40.
How do I remove sales tax from a price in Ontario?
Divide the tax-included amount by 1.13, instead of subtracting 13%. A $90.40 total gives back $90.40 ÷ 1.13 = $80.00 before tax. The CalculatriceTaxes.ca reverse calculator applies this formula automatically.
Do I add GST on top of HST in Ontario?
No. The 13% HST already includes the 5% federal share. The receipt shows a single HST line; adding GST on top would tax the federal share twice.
Which tax do I charge an Ontario customer when selling from Quebec?
Ontario's HST, 13%. Under the Canada Revenue Agency's place-of-supply rules, goods delivered or shipped to Ontario are taxed at Ontario's rate, wherever the seller is located. Charging Quebec's GST and QST (14.975%) on a sale delivered in Ontario would be a mistake.
