Sales Tax Rate in British Columbia in 2026

Rate in effect in 2026 in British Columbia, checked on against the Canada Revenue Agency and the Government of British Columbia.
TaxRate
GST (federal)5%
PST (provincial)7%
Combined rate12%

British Columbia collects two separate taxes: the federal 5% GST, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, and the 7% Provincial Sales Tax (PST), administered by the province's Ministry of Finance. B.C. left the HST and reinstated the PST on April 1, 2013.

The general 7% rate has exceptions: liquor is taxed at 10%, and passenger vehicles follow graduated rates based on price. The calculator applies the general rate. For a business, PST generally can't be recovered through input tax credits, unlike GST.

Worked Example: $80.00 in British Columbia

GST = price before tax × 5%
PST = price before tax × 7%
Total = price before tax + GST + PST

Example: $80.00 before tax in British Columbia

Price before tax $80.00
GST5% $4.00
PST7% $5.60
TOTAL $89.60

The math: $80.00 × 5% = $4.00 of GST; $80.00 × 7% = $5.60 of PST. Each tax is rounded to the cent, then added to the price, for a total of $89.60.

The Other Way: Finding the Price Before Tax

If the displayed price already includes tax, divide it by 1.12: $89.60 ÷ 1.12 = $80.00. Subtracting 12% from the total would give $78.85, too low a result: the percentage applies to the price before tax, not the total.

Frequently Asked Questions: Sales Tax in British Columbia

What is the sales tax rate in British Columbia in 2026?

The combined rate is 12% in British Columbia: the federal 5% GST plus the 7% PST, each calculated on the price before tax. On $100.00, that's $5.00 of GST, $7.00 of PST and a total of $112.00.

How do I calculate sales tax in British Columbia?

Multiply the price before tax by 1.12 to get the tax-included total, or by 12% to get the tax alone (calculating GST and PST separately, then adding them). On $80.00, the tax is $9.60 and the total is $89.60.

How do I remove sales tax from a price in British Columbia?

Divide the tax-included amount by 1.12, instead of subtracting 12%. A $89.60 total gives back $89.60 ÷ 1.12 = $80.00 before tax. The CalculatriceTaxes.ca reverse calculator applies this formula automatically.

Is PST calculated on top of GST?

No. GST and PST are each calculated on the price before tax, without compounding. On $100.00, that's $5.00 of GST and $7.00 of PST, not PST calculated on $105.00.

Can a business recover British Columbia's PST?

Generally, no. GST paid on business purchases is recoverable through input tax credits, but British Columbia's PST is a real cost to the business, except for specific exemptions set by the province.
