Sales Tax Rate in Nova Scotia in 2026
| Tax | Rate |
|---|---|
| Federal share (included in HST) | 5% |
| Provincial share (included in HST) | 9% |
| HST charged | 14% |
Nova Scotia has applied a 14% HST since April 1, 2025. The provincial government cut its share from 10% to 9%, while the federal share stayed at 5%. Before that date, the rate was 15%, the same as in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Many calculators and spreadsheets still use the old 15% rate, which overstates the tax by 1% of the amount. HST that became payable before April 1, 2025 remained payable at 15%; HST that becomes payable on or after that date is payable at 14%.
Worked Example: $45.99 in Nova Scotia
Tax = price before tax × 14%
Total = price before tax × 1.14
Example: $45.99 before tax in Nova Scotia
The math: $45.99 × 14% = $6.44 of HST. Each tax is rounded to the cent, then added to the price, for a total of $52.43.
The Other Way: Finding the Price Before Tax
If the displayed price already includes tax, divide it by 1.14: $52.43 ÷ 1.14 = $45.99. Subtracting 14% from the total would give $45.09, too low a result: the percentage applies to the price before tax, not the total.
Frequently Asked Questions: Sales Tax in Nova Scotia
What is the sales tax rate in Nova Scotia in 2026?
The rate is 14% in Nova Scotia: it's the HST, which combines the 5% federal share with a 9% provincial share. On $100.00, the tax is $14.00, for a total of $114.00.
How do I calculate sales tax in Nova Scotia?
Multiply the price before tax by 1.14 to get the tax-included total, or by 14% to get the tax alone. On $45.99, the tax is $6.44 and the total is $52.43.
How do I remove sales tax from a price in Nova Scotia?
Divide the tax-included amount by 1.14, instead of subtracting 14%. A $52.43 total gives back $52.43 ÷ 1.14 = $45.99 before tax. The CalculatriceTaxes.ca reverse calculator applies this formula automatically.
Do I add GST on top of HST in Nova Scotia?
No. The 14% HST already includes the 5% federal share. The receipt shows a single HST line; adding GST on top would tax the federal share twice.
Has Nova Scotia's HST rate changed?
Yes. Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025, by lowering its provincial share from 10% to 9%. It's the only recent sales tax rate change in Canada. A $100.00 invoice now carries $14.00 of HST instead of $15.00.
