A tax calculator is only useful if its rates are right. These are the rules we follow for figures, guides and corrections. The French version of this page prevails if the two versions differ.

Where the rates come from

Every rate is taken directly from the official source, never from another calculator site:

  • GST and HST: Canada Revenue Agency;
  • QST: Revenu Québec;
  • PST and RST: the finance ministries of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba;
  • Quebec lodging tax and land transfer duties: Revenu Québec and the municipalities concerned.

One source of truth

All rates on the site live in a single table. The calculator, the 13 province pages, the comparison table and the examples in the articles all read that same table. When a rate changes, it changes everywhere at once, so one page cannot stay out of date while another is current.

Updates

Rates are reviewed with every federal or provincial budget and as soon as a change is announced (for example Nova Scotia's HST cut from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025). Pages show the year of the rates displayed, and articles carry their last-updated date.

How the guides are written

  • Each article answers a real question: splitting GST from QST, invoicing as a self-employed worker, tax on a used car, and so on.
  • Formulas are shown, and every example is re-run through the site's calculator before publication.
  • Exceptions (zero-rated goods, rebates, special cases) are named rather than left out.
  • The English version is a reviewed translation of the French text, not a different text.

Corrections

An error reported through the contact page is checked against the official source. A wrong rate is fixed first, usually within 48 hours; an unclear explanation is rewritten in the article concerned and its updated date is changed.

Advertising and independence

The site is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no access to the content: they do not choose topics, rates or recommendations. Ads sit in areas labelled "Advertisement" and are never presented as calculation results. We do not publish sponsored content.

Limits

These rules reduce the risk of error without removing it. Results remain estimates: see the disclaimer and the terms of use.
